Hello, everyone!
The Nintendo Switch has been a massive success over the past seven years. With over 146 million units sold, it has become the third best-selling console of all time. Not bad, huh? But, as with all hardware, the Switch is beginning to show its age and is set to be replaced soon by its successor. While we don’t yet know its official name, we do have some details released by Nintendo over the past few months. So buckle up—let’s dive into everything we officially know about the Nintendo Switch 2 (or whatever it ends up being called). Let’s go!
First, as you may already know, there’s been a lot of speculation online about the Switch successor. Here, we’ll do our best to stick to confirmed facts, ensuring the information you read is accurate. So far, three key pieces of information have been confirmed by Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa:
- The Release Timeline. Furukawa has confirmed that we’ll hear news about Nintendo’s next console before the end of the 2024 fiscal year. This means we can expect an official reveal—including the console’s name, technical specifications, and possibly its initial game lineup—before March 31, 2025. However, there’s no word yet on the actual release date of the console.
- Backward Compatibility. Great news for current Switch owners: Furukawa has also confirmed that the next Nintendo console will be backward compatible with Switch software. This means you’ll be able to play your existing Switch games on the new console, including many original Wii U titles that were re-released on the Switch.
- Nintendo Switch Online. Nintendo Switch Online will continue to be supported. While we don’t know if the service will be rebranded, Furukawa has stated that Nintendo aims to build on its existing online community: “We believe that it is important for Nintendo’s future to make use of Nintendo Account and carry over the good relationship that we have built with the over 100 million annual playing users on Nintendo Switch to its successor”.
That’s all we know for now! The hype for Nintendo’s next console is building, and we’re just as excited as you are. We’ll update you once we have more news about the Switch’s successor!
