The Nintendo Switch 2 is official! Here’s the latest confirmed information

It’s real! Nintendo has finally revealed the Nintendo Switch 2 (yes, that’s the official name), and we now have some details about its specs. While Nintendo has only released a video showcasing the design, we still don’t know much about its internal hardware. However, we do have a good idea of what to expect from this highly anticipated successor. Here are the main changes and upgrades:

• A Larger Screen: The Nintendo Switch 2 will be bigger than its predecessor. While the exact size hasn’t been confirmed, rumors suggest it could feature an 8-inch display. For comparison, the original Switch had a 6.2-inch screen, and the OLED model had a 7-inch display.
• Magnetic Joy-Cons: The new Joy-Cons will attach magnetically to the console. Additionally, Nintendo has reportedly worked to resolve the infamous drift issue with the analog sticks. A patent also suggests that the Joy-Cons could function as mouse controllers, though this hasn’t been officially confirmed.
• Dual USB-C Ports: Unlike the original Switch, which had a single USB-C port at the bottom, the Switch 2 will have two—one at the bottom and another at the top. While the purpose of the second port is still unknown, speculation suggests it could support new accessories, such as a camera or a secondary screen. At the very least, it will allow for easier charging while playing in tabletop mode.
• A Mystery Button: A new square button has been spotted on the right Joy-Con, but its function remains unclear. We’ll have to wait a few more weeks to find out what it does.
• Launch Details: Nintendo has confirmed that the Switch 2 will be released in 2025. Additionally, a Nintendo Direct is scheduled for April 2, where the company is expected to reveal key details such as the official release date, price, and game lineup.
• New Games (Maybe Mario Kart?): No games have been officially announced yet, but a brief glimpse of a new Mario Kart was spotted in the reveal video. Given that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe originated on the Wii U, it’s safe to assume a brand-new entry is in development.
• Backwards Compatibility & Online Service: Nintendo has confirmed that the Switch 2 will be backwards compatible with Nintendo Switch games. It will also continue using the same Nintendo Online service, meaning players can access their existing digital libraries when upgrading to the new console.
