Get your account and games ready to enter the new era of Nintendo Switch
With the Nintendo Switch 2 around, you might feel it’s time to say goodbye to the handheld that gave you so many years of fun and memorable experiences. But if you were thinking of putting your Switch back in its box and just moving forward, wait a second—switching from one device to another involves a few more steps than just logging in with your account on the new console.
The data stored in your original Switch system (account info, game saves, screenshots, system and parental control settings) must be transferred to Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo offers two different ways to complete the data transfer process and both of them are quite easy if you count on the right instructions, so here we are to guide you through the whole thing!
Choose one of the following options according to your current situation, and let's get started:
How To Data Transfer From Switch To Switch 2
A) You Own A Nintendo Switch 2
With this method, you can keep your data on the old console and continue playing with it if you wish!
For starters, turn on your Nintendo Switch 2 and go through the initial setup options (language, region, End-User License Agreement, Internet connection, timezone…) until you reach the System Transfer screen. It might take you around 2-3 minutes to get there.
Before clicking on Start System Transfer, make sure your old Nintendo Switch has the latest software version installed. This is important because you should find an option called ‘System Transfer to Nintendo Switch 2’ inside your System settings menu.
Extra info: You can even transfer those accounts that are not linked to a Nintendo account, but please note that they can’t be transferred back once you’ve migrated them to a Switch 2. Same goes with those games that don’t support cloud saving.
Now that both devices are ready to go, choose ‘Start System Transfer’ on your Nintendo Switch 2 and log into your Nintendo account. After that, place both consoles side to side and click ‘System Transfer To Nintendo Switch 2’ on the original Switch to begin with the process.
B) You Don’t Own A Nintendo Switch 2 Yet
Choose this option if you are subscribed to Nintendo Switch Online and want to prepare for data migration before the Switch 2 arrives at your home.
On your Nintendo Switch, go to System > System Transfer to Nintendo Switch 2 and select ‘I don’t have a Nintendo Switch 2 yet’ when this option appears. After that, you’ll be able to see all the information that will be uploaded to the cloud server. If you’re okay with it, click on ‘Upload Data’ to continue the process.
Extra info: Bear in mind that all data on your Switch will be deleted upon completion. Also remember that some of your games may not be compatible with cloud saving.
To continue data migration on Nintendo Switch 2, complete the initial setup until the ‘Start System Transfer’ option appears on screen. Click on it, log into your Nintendo account and the system will automatically find your data backup.
Do Your Switch Games Support Save Data Backup?
There are three ways to check this out:
-
Nintendo eShop: Visit your game’s eShop page and scroll down to the Software Details. This info should be available next to ‘Save Data Cloud Backup’.
- My Nintendo Store: Visit My Nintendo Store from your desktop PC or mobile device, search your game and see if Save Data Cloud is listed next to the Nintendo Switch Online section.
- Software Menu Options: If you already own the game, go to the software menu options and select ‘Save Data Cloud’. If this feature is not supported, it will be indicated.
Additionally, remember that some games will receive additional features and/or content on Nintendo Switch 2. You’ll be able to play the game after data migration if this update is free, or you pay its upgrade pack in some cases. There are just a few Switch games that are not compatible with Switch 2, please check the official list on Nintendo’s website.
If you’ve just completed the data transfer process, congratulations! It’s time to experience a new era of portable gaming with the queen of handhelds. But to make the most of it in all circumstances, you will need the proper equipment – a tempered glass screen protector, a robust carrying case, some cool thumbstick grips for better precision… And guess what, we have it all!
